The Identity Crisis
Eating disorders have a way of attaching themselves to identity.
Over time, the thoughts can start to feel like you.
The fear.
The perfectionism.
The obsession.
The inner criticism.
But your struggle is not your identity. You were created in the image of God before fear ever entered the picture.
That means your worth was never built on:
- Your body
- Your appearance
- Your control
- Your performance
- Your eating disorder
Recovery is not about becoming someone completely different. It’s about uncovering who you were underneath survival mode all along. And sometimes that can feel unfamiliar. Because when survival mode has been present for a long time, it can become difficult to separate who you are from what you’ve been carrying.
But healing is not losing yourself. It’s returning to the person God created underneath the fear.
Want to go deeper? Ask yourself:
Who would I be if I stopped letting my struggle define me?
This week, pay attention to the labels you place on yourself.
→ Instead of saying: “I am anxious.” Try: “I am experiencing anxiety.”
→ Instead of: “I am broken.” Try: “I am healing.”
Your struggle may be part of your story. But it is not your name.
Prayer:
God, help me separate my identity from my struggle. Remind me that I am more than fear, thoughts, or coping patterns. Show me who You created me to be. Amen.
Glow forward,
Elyse
